Do’s & Don’ts: Staying In Hotels

Whether you travel boujee or frugal, you’ve most likely stayed in a hotel or motel before. While staying as a guest in a foreign place it is sometimes easy to lose sight of common courtesy or general “rules” to look out for. Here are some of our top Do’s and Don’ts for staying in hotels.

DO – Get a safe box, especially if you are staying for a long period of time. Most hotel staff will respect your belongings and room, but unfortunately for those few who do not, we need to take extra precautions. Most rooms come with a safe.

DON’T – Abuse room service. I’ve literally never rung room service. It is a nice luxury to have, and if it is offered at your hotel feel free to use it. However, keep in mind that the servers and hotel staff are people too and should not be treated as a servant. Room service can also be quite costly.

DO – Tip the cleaning staff. Depending on where you are vacationing, the staff may get paid minimal wages or less to work at the hotel you are staying at. For some workers getting tips could mean being able to afford their rent or not. Even just a few dollars can show your appreciation for their help and can go a long way.

DON’T  – Throw a rowdy party. You’re on holidays, go out to the club or a bar and drink and dance all you want, as loud as you want without disturbing anyone’s sleep. People are literally paying to sleep there and will be displeased if your shenanigans get in the way of that. The last thing you want is a noise complaint, fine, or angry vacationers.

DO – Try to clean up after yourself as much as possible. Whether I am on vacation or not I also want to minimize the amount of work others need to do. Things like making the bed or taking out the trash are things you aren’t obligated to do because you do not have access to clean sheets nor a garbage disposal, however, you can clear clutter, fold your clothes and hang your towels.

DON’T – Steal hotel property. It’s ok to take the shampoo, body lotion and hand soap, but do not take the towels, bed sheets, or anything else that is not up for grabs. Not only is this not right, but hotels do inventory checks after guests leave and if anything is missing you will be paying for it!

What To Do When You’re In Limbo

As you may have been able to tell, we haven’t posted anything in a while – 2 months to be exact – and for this, we apologize. It’s difficult to think of content to write about or post about when you have little to nothing exciting going on, or when you’re in limbo. Here are some things I personally like to do when I’m in limbo-mode to get my gears turning again.

Find A Creative Outlet
Find one, two or many activities that you enjoy where you can express yourself, be creative and start thinking outside the box. If you have a menial job or very repetitive routine than having a creative hobby to jump into can be really helpful. Personally, I love to write, take photos, and create houses in the Sims!

Plan, Plan, Plan!
We all need something to look forward to. Whether it’s going to see a new movie at the theatre on the weekend or planning a 2 week trip to China it’s always motivating to plan and get excited about what is to come. Plan something small for the weekend coming up, plan a small weekend trip or start saving for your next big adventure!

Put Out Content
See, this is where I messed up. I may have not had anything too exciting to share for the last little while (We are going to New York City in December though – woo!) but it’s always important to keep contact and share your experiences – no matter how small. This is how we, as humans, build relationships and long-lasting impressions on each other.

Join Groups
Seriously! Facebook has tones of these you can request to join so you can interact with people who have similar interests, dreams, and goals as you. Often people will share pointers and tips on their travels, recipes, dating advice – whatever it is you’re into! You can make some great lasting relationships here which will carry into other areas of your life. A great place to get some feedback and ask questions to real people that you just can’t get the answers to on Google!

Keep Your Eye On The Goal
Always remember why you started what you started. Keep it going strong to the end. Nothing comes easy and perseverance does pay off! Create a goal/dream board, get branded merchandise or just put a small sticky note on your desk as a daily reminder from you to you to keep on going.

Feel free to share any tips or advice you may have for when you get stuck in a rut. How do you stay motivated and change things up? Drop us a comment – we would love to hear from you!
