The Importance of Exploring Your Own Backyard

I’m sure all of those with wanderlust like me are with me when I say I would rather be anywhere in the world but at home! Most of us have a desire to get up and go, explore and see the different corners of the world than where we currently are. Something we don’t always think of is that our home town is a tourist spot for someone! Just because you live in your area day in and day out doesn’t mean someone else may be really intrigued or fascinated by what your town has to offer.

Cost Effective
It’s important to think like this because travelling and sight-seeing within your own city is not only cost-effective, but you learn a lot about your town and yourself as well. We often will take little trips out on the weekends, take some photos and find some new spots or restaurants to check out. Somethings are blog-worthy and others not, but we have a good time and feel like we are having a little stay-cation at the same time!

Fun Activities
It helps that we live in our nations capital (Ottawa, ON) because there is almost always something going on. We often have many cultural festivals, food festivals, charity runs, music festivals and art installments happening nearly every weekend. For smaller towns this may not be such an often occurrence, but check out these festivals or events when they come to town! If you don’t live too far away from a major city maybe take a weekend-trip to check out some sights or attractions at a low cost.

Learning your Roots
Maybe you’ve lived here all your life or maybe you’ve recently relocated here, nonetheless it is always important to know your roots and where you live and came from. Learning about your towns history will give you insight and respect for your hometown (and a bunch of cool fun-facts!) that you may not have had before. You’ll also become an expert when it comes to your town and can educate tourists, friends and family, and people you meet.

Starting Somewhere
For those of you who are aspiring travel bloggers or influencers – you need to start somewhere! Your own backyard is the best place to do this because you are already starting to become and expert on your town and it’s offerings and can write insightful and in-depth pieces regarding the tourism in your area. It may not always be possible or affordable to take multiple trips per year to feed your travel bug, so why not take an excursion nearby for less! You will still get awesome pictures and stories to write about.

Hoping this info was helpful and has inspired you to check out some sights and sounds in your neighborhood! Drop us a comment and tell us where you’re from and the best tourist attraction you have around!

Very true words! I live in the metro Detroit area. I love the riverfront. Always something going on. Concerts, festivals. People walking, jogging, cycling, eating, people-watching, resting and enjoying the zen of the water.
